Introduction . . .This community is situated ajacent to Northumberland Strait in
Lot 46. It was possibly given this name because the bay is much smaller than Colville Bay to the west at Souris. It was named in 1765 by Surveyor-General Samuel Holland as Hervey Cove for William Hervey. On the 1744 Bellin map, it appears as Havre a l'Anguille. The 1863 Lake Map shows Harvey Cove. Black Pond is shared by Little Harbour and Red Point. It is named for the dark shadow cast by surrounding woods. Early Scottish settlers called it
Loch Dhu, meaning "black lake".
A brief history . . .
A windstorm on August 2, 1893 blew down the new church at Dundas, under construction. Many fields of crops were ruined from Little Harbour to Bay Fortune, by hailstones.
A St. Pierre schooner, the Quick, with Captain LeBlanc aboard was seized near Souris on September 26, 1894, by the cruiser, The Kingfisher. There was over $1,000 worth of liquor and cigarettes aboard.

The Federal Migratory Bird Sanctuary was established at Black Pond in 1936.Today . . .
