Introduction . . .

This community is situated east of Souris in Lot 45. It was named by a settler from Chepstow, Monmouth, Wales and appears on an 1845 map. There was a post office here from 1878 until 1913. Chepstow Point is an ajacent feature. The 1880 Atlas also shows Chepstow Cove. Norris Pond is situated just outside the Souris town limits.

A brief history . . .

The first school in the Souris area was established at Norris Pond in 1843, with Edmund Shea as teacher.

Well over 50 whales beached themselves at Norris Pond in 1925, creating a temporary economic boom. The rendered oil brought $10.00 a gallon to the locals who extracted the commodity from the carcasses.

Large loads of Norris Pond sand were loaded aboard a barge in 1942 and shipped to the R.C.A.F. base in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to place on slippery runways. The R.C.A.F thought it was best around for it refused to blow away like most sands. They return for more in the fall of 1943.

Interesting individuals associated with the community . . .

Piper John MacPhee's father was raised in Chepstow. John is an outstanding musician who started playing the bagpipes when he was eight years old. He is a graduate of the College of Piping in Summerside. He has played all over North America and earned numerous awards in competitions. In 2001, he joined the acclaimed Cape Breton Celtic Rock band Slainte Mhath.

Welcome Home
Anne MacLennan

I won't be far away, for life goes on
So if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near
And if you listen within your heart
You'll hear my love around you, soft and clear
And then when you must come this way alone
I'll greet you with a smile, and say
Welcome Home.

- Anne (Perry) MacLennan was raised in
Chepstow. This poem was published
in The Beacon in the mid 1990's. A
proud mom, today she resides in Rollo
Bay, employed as a bookkeeper for a
Kings County based business.
