A brief history . . .
The first school in the Souris area was established at Norris Pond in 1843, with Edmund Shea as teacher.Well over 50 whales beached themselves at Norris Pond in 1925, creating a temporary economic boom. The rendered oil brought $10.00 a gallon to the locals who extracted the commodity from the carcasses.
Large loads of Norris Pond sand were loaded aboard a barge in 1942 and shipped to the R.C.A.F. base in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to place on slippery runways. The R.C.A.F thought it was best around for it refused to blow away like most sands. They return for more in the fall of 1943.
