Introduction . . .

Eglington is located six miles southwest of Souris in Lot 43. The community derives its name from Eglington Cove which is ajacent to Northumberland Strait. Surveyor-General Samuel Holland named the area in 1765 for Alexander Montgomery (1723-1769), the 10th. Earl of Eglington. He was the second son of Alexander Montgomerie, 9th. Earl of Eglington and his second wife, Lady Ann Gordon, daughter of the 1st. Earl of Aberdeen and Temair. He was educated at Winchester. He served as Governor of Dumbarton Castle (1759-61) and was Lord of Bedchamber (1760-67). He served as a Scottish Representative Peer from 1761 till his death. He died unmarried on October 25, 1769, having been shot by Mungo Campbell, an excise officer, whom the Earl had found trespassing on his lands. Campbell was convicted of murder at Edinburgh, and took his own life in prison before sentence could be carried out in February 1770.

Eglington Point later became Abells Cape and Eglington Cape was later renamed Howe Point. It became a school district in 1859.
