TEN FARMS BECOME A TOWN

SOURIS -The town of Souris launched its detailed and intriguing community history 'Ten Farms Become a Town' earlier this week, documenting the evolution of its people and its lands.

Guests filled the auditorium to welcome the history written by Adele Townshend and based on extensive historical research and documentation compiled by the late Island historian George Leard of Souris.

The history covers the initial 10 farms surrounding Colville Bay, from settlement. to their incorporation as a town in the early 1900's. Ian Scott, executive director of the P .E.I. Museum and Heritage Foundation, described the book as unusually precise and very readable. He said It stands out among all community histories he's seen over the past five years as a real piece of professional esearch.

MIX OF PHOTOS

The care, thought and effort in the book's overall design is reflected in the cover itself and carried throughout, where a facinating mix of photos collected by Ray Leard support a strong, well written description.

Another of the book's outstanding features is its detailed reference structure crediting all photos, and referencing everything to a source, said Mr. Scott.

"This kind of documentation creates an important resource for everyone, and is the mark of a professional."

Ms. Townshend was joined by premier Joe Ghiz as she saluted contributing authors Olga and Waldron Leard, wife and nephew of the late historian, and all editors, typists and supporters who made the book possible.

'Ten Farms Become A Town' is currently available at the Souris Town Hall and Est. W. B. Leard Clothing Store for $15.95, with all profits going to the George A. Leard Scholarship fund for deserving students in Island history.
