Introduction . . .

Dundas is south-west of Souris on Route 4 and is in Lot 55. The community was named for George Dundas, Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island 1859 -1868. It was noted as such in the 1864 P.E.I. Directory. A post office served the area as Dundas from 1869 to 1914, and as Dundas Centre from 1925 to 1969.

A brief history . . .

In 1840, 16 families of Presbyterian background arrived in Dundas. Surnames included Acorn, Campbell, MacDonald, MacKay, MacKenzie, MacKinnon, MacLeod, Martin, Matheson and Nicholson.

Dundas

The Hon. George Dundas was born in England in 1819. He entered the British army in 1839, serving in Bermuda and Nova Scotia until 1844. Upon his return to Britain he represented Linlithgow in the British House of Commons from 1847-58. On June 8, 1859 he was appointed the thirteenth Lieutenant-Governor of Province of Prince Edward Island. In 1875 he was appointed governor of St. Vincent and the Antilles. In 1879 he was created a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.). Governor Dundas died at St. Vincent and the Antilles March 18, 1880.
