My interest in photography began many years ago when I started travelling. To date I've had the opportunity to backpack through 37 countries, 10 Canadian provinces, and 25 U.S. states.

In these days of digital photography, it's now difficult to believe that during a trip I used to try to limit myself to an average of 12 slides per day, making sure that each location and shot set-up was chosen carefully so that very few of the expensive slides would be wasted. Then it would be several months until I arrived home, mailed the film, and waited for it to be developed ... before actually getting to see how the pictures turned out. It was exciting to be able to finally show them on the big screen to my family, friends, and students.

Digital photography has certainly opened up the options for shooting as many pictures as one likes and for checking immediately to see if they turned out okay. ~ Shane

I wasn't particularly pleased with the design of this photo but the webmaster said that people from away would enjoy seeing the brown cliffs next to the white snow and ice. He's probably right.

"Nobody's going to steal my farmer's wood!" ... I don't usually get time for a break at noon but a photo of the day was needed so I took a quick drive out through Gowan Brae and spotted this protector of the wood, looking more photogenic than dangerous.

After clambering down a cliff, being scratched by branches, getting mud on my clean pants, and returning with one wet sneaker, the best picture turned out to be the first one taken... shot from above, on the nice clean grass.

The colourful trees are located in the front yard at my brother's cottage ... The photo was taken on his birthday ... seven years after he passed away from leukemia.

"Noel's Fury" ... The storm was starting to abate a bit when this photo was taken ... but the wind was still howling and the waves were roaring in. I was standing on the cliffs near the lighthouse and had to be careful not to get blown over the bank.

Remembrance Day ... The colours of the wreaths were vibrant, standing out on the cloudy day. By the time I returned with my camera, the Magdalen Islands ferry was passing through the harbour, making for an original scene.

It was getting pretty late for a photo of the day so I was taking a short cut, racing down a snow-covered country lane, hoping for a possible shot in another community ... but these posts caught my eye just before the afternoon light totally disappeared.

I had spent about half an hour on this very cold day out on the breakwater, with frost-bitten fingers, taking what I thought were beautiful photos of the snowy wharf and ice cakes in the water. The lighthouse picture was an afterthought as I was driving away ... but the webmaster liked it best.

Another late afternoon of frozen fingers, as I was continually removing my gloves (and skis) to take shots during a two-hour trek around the local trails. The colourful ski equipment created a nice contrast next to the curving white track.

I had been working very hard on my studies all week so it was enjoyable to take a 30 minute break, shooting dozens of photos of the lovely sunset while experimenting with the settings on my camera. By the way, the tree is living; it just happens to like growing sideways.

Just minutes before I had been across the other side of the bay, photographing the birds soaring in the breeze, and just hopped out of the car on my way home to take a shot here before the sun went down. The image is a bit dark but the curves of the woods and streams are nice.

The local ski trails are really lovely at night. There are 3 km of track available under the lights. Skiers here love a winter with steady -5 to -10 degree temperatures.

This little country squirrel, on the left, was kind enough to pose on the fence post for about two minutes, letting me creep to within ten feet of him. It looks like his paws were as cold as my fingers were.

Several people in the town mentioned that they saw some crazy guy out on the ice a hundred yards offshore, taking photographs among the ice cakes. It probably looked dramatic but there were actually just a few inches of water between the ice and the sand. I liked some of the other shots better than this one but I guess the webmaster enjoys viewing weird shapes in the pictures occasionally.

Having the 'Today in the life of Eastern Kings' site available on Flickr provides a terrific way for thousands of people to be able to view the beautiful shots of the area taken by Waldron and other photographers every day.

There are many famous and lovely sights which can be photographed throughout the world but there are very few which can compare to the variety of scenes and seasons to be found in eastern Kings county, Prince Edward Island.
