This is my photographic holiday to eastern P.E.I., Canada. My introduction to making pictures came from my grandmothers. At my departure for Edinburgh (university), they joined together to give me a camera and several roles of film. I was expected to make pictures of the world surrounding me and send them to the ladies. They continously sent a few bob for film and to make the snaps. I still have their camera. Cameras have entered the computer age. I use my handy Canon and cherish each picture I make. Still, I could never bear to toss the old camera in the rubbish. All my albums are reminders of happy events throughout my life. ~ Dr. Mairi

In January 2008, Jaime chose to have a quarter year adventure in Canada. It was prompted by the Eastern Kings Meeting Place web site. At her return, her exuberance aroused me. Viewing the site I agreed the scenery was lovely.

My guide was one of Jaime's friends. A more ardent promoter of this county, cannot be found. Having left my Canon in the flat, Kodak loaners were offered by Jeanette and Waldron, accepted and appreciated.

I enjoy wild flowers and unusual (to me) plants. A variety (weeds, according to Prince Edward Islanders) were scattered everywhere. These were dainty.

Mr. Leard shares a district in his county through Today In The Life of Eastern Kings, to the world. I was invited to contribute to this stunning array of pictures. My first choice was Basin Head. Jaime found peace walking along the shore. I was curious to see her calendar photo in a summer setting .

Basin Head is magnificent. I found Goldenrod (more weeds)

The last morning I returned and found a herring gull calling into the wind . Was the gull as I, lamenting my leaving, crying for Jaime to return or issuing the call to the sea?

A hire car is a must to move about. The train service was discontinued several decades past. The tracks were removed and rebranded as a hiking trail. On Karon's loaner, I cycled through a lovely forest until the rains came. There was much to enjoy. I enjoyed the birds. They perched, scolded and watched me in return.

Bird watching was enjoyed by myself at beaches and harbours. It was lovely to see the gulls familiar to me. The Waxwings enjoyed the berries. There were full bellies all around.

The last morning, I left Charlottetown before the sun arose. Watching the clock, I detoured on my way to Stanfield Airport, to walk the shore at Basin Head one more time. Two Americans and their dogs favourably compared our impressions with me. An hour later, I made another picture for Today in the Life of Eastern Kings. At my return to Cambridge, Jaime expanded the picture. We discovered that I was in the presence of a seal.

Boarding the ferry at Wood Islands, the hire car stalled. It rebelled and, as I, did not wish to leave Prince Edward Island. I returned to England rested and refreshed.

The sun set on my first visit to PEI. I have faith I shall soon return to Prince Edward Island, a place of respite and peace.

We would not be aware of Prince Edward Island except for Today In The Life of Eastern Kings. I chose not be challenged by other holiday makers and over crowding. In planning, I miscalculated. Four days was not sufficient. I spoke to residents most of whom take the environment and beauty for granted. Basin Head is a treasure. I will return to experience others that Mr. Leard described to me.

A healthy meal may found at the Sheltered Harbour Cafe in Fortune, and the Right Bite Cafe in Souris. I returned to Jaime's friends the Cole's, in Charlottetown, with veggies from honesty based roadside kiosks such as Townshend's in Rollo Bay West and the Dundas Heritage Farm. My pictures are found in Mairi's Adventures on flickr.com. Thank you to the Campbell, Cole, Gallant and Leard families for your time and attention.
