| My pictures, and those of the other photographers here, remind me that My Bit of Borrowed Earth is the most beautiful place on the planet. Waldron has been a great inspiration, pointing out many special spots "up east", and introducing me to fellow photographers and friends. I've lived in this area for a few years now and am constantly finding new inspiration. At times, it's overwhelming. My love of photography definitely started as a young child. I can't remember a time when I didn't have my own camera. Now I own three. My grandmother took pictures of everything, as do I. It wasn't until I started traveling, that I really found a passion for pictures. I've had several trips to Scotland, as well as adventures in England, Wales, Ireland, Europe and Africa. I can't imagine any of those trips without a camera in hand. It allows me the privilege of recording memories in a fabulous way. | Tara at the spring in Monticello |
Today, I often find myself traveling with two cameras, using my Nikon digital SLR for most of my shoots. Sometimes, I get out my old Pentax and dream of putting in my own darkroom. I shoot for my dreams (double meaning), and hope someday to figure out how I can make part of my living in a photography-related field, perhaps during my summers off from teaching. For now, it is a hobby I adore and am developing, taking courses and bringing my camera everywhere I go. How could I not, being lucky enough to live in the most beautiful place in the world? I hope some of what I see in these photos shines through and provides inspiration to others. ~ Tara Glencorradale January 16, 2005 | This was my first trip to The Big Elm. She won me over instantly. It's common knowledge that I'm most at peace when surrounded by trees. They make great subjects and tell wonderful stories. I can't get enough of this one, as she is truly a hidden treasure. I have been to visit many times. This was taken a short stroll from my house. There's something romantic about weathered fences. This one is no exception. I can't help but wonder, why did it end here? | St. Catherines July 11, 2008 | St. Catherines July 11, 2008 | This gorgeous creature is Sheep Laurel. It grows near and around boggy areas here on the island. I was struck by the colours while out for a walk on a particularly sunny day. I didn't know what it was, so took extra photos. I later chatted with a biologist acquaintance who was able to give me the name. I still wonder why I'd never seen this beauty before. What a gift to have spotted it. It made me smile. This is one of about a hundred photos I took at the lily pond a short walk from my house. It takes my breathe away each time I visit. It's here that I also stumbled on the Sheep Laurel. The pond is covered in a lily blanket, making me focus again and again, questioning whether it's real or a flawless painting. It's so picture perfect. This lily pond is almost deafening in the summer, with the sounds of frogs and toads constantly "ribbiting". I could sit and listen forever. It's one of nature's symphonies at its finest. | St. Catherines July 11, 2008 | Priest Pond August 27, 2008 | Great Blue Herons are a common sight here. Despite this, they aren't the easiest subjects to get. They seem to fly away just as I'm focusing. This one was gracious enough to stay still just long enough. It made him that much prettier. What a treat this was. I was watching these semi-palmated plovers strolling along the beach edge. I may have moved too quickly, startling them, as they took to flight in unison. I must have snapped about twenty shots and ended up with this little gem. They certainly are a graceful and pretty bird. The waves in the background make a great accent. | Bayfield August 27, 2008 | Monticello August 27, 2008 | Thank you, Waldron, for showing me this perfect bit of tranquility. It is a truly magical place. I was in awe and excited to visit this colourful waterfall. Many will tell you we don't have waterfalls on the island, but I've been to two this year. I had a drink of the water here, from a fresh, bubbling spring. It was the purest water I've ever tasted. I will definitely travel to this little 'off the beaten path' treasure, again and again.I took this one while on assignment. Waldron was working the exhibition and needed a photographer. Off I went, very early in the morning, heading to one of many favourite haunts. This was the first picture of many I took that day. I called it 'Sand Trap'. It won the People's Choice and later went on to get Photo of the Month. Wow. I was so honoured. That day was also my dad's birthday. A special and great day all around. | Little Harbour September 13, 2008 | North Lake September 13, 2008 | This photo was also in the running for the people's choice. I love North Lake. It's extremely busy during fishing season and very quiet at other times. I was there early in the morning and found so many birds, some watching me as much as I was watching them. They remind me how close I live to the water and that we often overlook what is right outside our door. This herring gull posed perfectly for the camera. I wonder if he knew how much he impacted my great day.Waldron informed me that people visiting the site from 'away' especially love pictures of round hay bales. I think some of us here appreciate them, too. I loved the yellow and green in front of this one. It stopped me in my tracks as I was driving by. I was pleased to hear it was in the running for the people's choice. It means a lot to have others recognize beauty, where I too, have spotted it. | Bothwell September 13, 2008 | Upton October 25, 2008 | Fall is by far my favourite time of year. As stated earlier, trees are a favourite of mine, too. Combining my love of trees and the fall colours creates an intoxicating canvas for my camera and for me. I can't get enough of it. The reflections on the water added to the beauty of this one. It makes me smile. This is another example of nature's colours at her finest. I didn't notice so much the beauty of this one until I looked at it in contrast to its neighbour on the left. They are both shining examples of the variety of our island's fall colours. I never grow tired of looking at them, through my own eyes and that of my camera's. | Upton October 25, 2008 | Upton October 25, 2008 | We are so lucky to see and hear geese during many times of the year. I don't remember taking this exact shot, as I'd taken so many of geese on this particular day. These birds are positively gorgeous, whether sitting in a field or flying overhead. I especially love listening to them, as they usually announce themselves long before you can see them. I can't help but stop, watch and listen. I love this picture. It's definitely a favourite of mine. It was such a treat to be taken here. I had no idea it existed. The sound of the water equaled the beauty of its appearance. The light was just right. I had to climb down a slippery slope, hanging on to the odd branch, in order to get the perfect shot. I was thrilled with the final product. | Fortune October 25, 2008 | Nature's canvas is intoxicating. I simply can't get enough of it. I have to thank Waldron for sharing this site with me and opening my eyes to many eastern P.E.I. places I'd not have found on my own. Thanks too, to Jaime for showing me the area through the eyes of someone from away, as well as for helping put this together. I'm very lucky to have grown up here and even luckier to be living here now. I love to travel and even live in other places, but this area, the prettiest part of our island, will always have my heart. My bit of borrowed earth will forever be home, no matter where the next chapter takes me.Mother Goddess' photostream on flickr Copyright Tara L. Stewart
